Other Stellar April Fools Releases

Posted by on

Yes, briefly we were WTF, no longer WTB, and it was splendid April Fools merriment.  Some employees even wore suits... still not sure why but they did, I swear.

There were some that were... well, just great ideas by some fellow bike companies and I've got to hand it to them.

Like this one by Chris King, amazing:

INTRODUCING CHRIS KING’S GRAVEL VISION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Portland, OR – April 1st, 2014

Chris King Precision Components pioneers #GRAVELVISION, a new methodology for contextualizing our components within the fast developing riding category of gravel grinding.

Take a moment and look around. Our world is not made solely of thick black tarmac and narrow winding trails. Between these two lives something, a treasure hiding in plain view. The wind knows this secret and it whispers a single word, a word that is echoed down the long straight stretches of forgotten roads, over under serviced potholes and across cracked and broken chip seal. That word is GRAVEL.

It goes on to describe opening neural pathways through deliberately palming pieces of gravel, linking up previously unconnected portions of the brain.

GENIUS.

Next up, Cane Creek.  I really have to hand it to them.  This is something that we would laugh about, talk about very enthusiastically, then never have the guts to do it.  They did it, fully.  Bravo Cane Creek, bravo.

CANE CREEK INSERTS ITSELF INTO SPORTS NUTRITION MARKET

Cane Creek inserts itself into sports nutrition market

April 1, 2014 - News has leaked from the offices of Cane Creek Cycling Components that they will push into the sports nutrition market. Cane Creek is known best for its standard setting innovations like the threadless headset and Double Barrel family of shocks, and they are now ready to change the way cyclists feel about and interact with sports nutrition. Like other rule-breaking innovations, this change will likely meet with some resistance at first and many will be uncomfortable with it during the early stages of market penetration.

It is so clever and shameless and goes on.  My favorite part is definitely the suppository to gerbil comparison.  Check out the full post here: http://www.canecreek.com/culture/blog-news/cane-creek-inserts-itself-into-sports-nutrition-market

And then there's one we talked about but couldn't quite bring ourselves to and had we, I'm not sure we would have done such an incredible job - hat's off to you Felt, you're clever and quick on your toes!

FELT BICYCLES DEBUTS ENDURO
SPECIFIC 559 WHEELSIZE

Faster acceleration
Lower weight
Enduro specific

April 2014: Felt Bicyles Intl. Headquarters Irvine, CA

Felt Bicycles is proud to announce the Spring '14 release of the proprietary 559 EnduRAD Enduro specific wheelsize for 2015 Felt models. With the rise in popularity of 29" and 650b wheels, Felt saw a market segment that was being underserved by the sometimes "too big" existing wheelsizes, and Felt began looking for solutions immediately. Originally a children's bicycle tire standard, 559 has been repurposed to complete Felt's already incredible Enduro-specific lineup. The key to 559 is its size: 559 is only 12.5mm and 4.28% smaller than 650b, making it an easy transition for those accustomed to larger wheels. The slightly smaller 559 wheel can be ideal in many technical riding situations, including tight switchbacks, jumps, bermed corners, and aggressive, loose terrain. Riders of all ages and experience levels will find 559 to be more playful, more intuitive, and less intimidating than 650b or 29" wheels.
