If you prefer racing this weekend head up to Northstar for the Tara Llanes Classic ! The race is a benefit for the TARA LLANES ROAD to RECOVERY program.
Tara Llanes has been a phenomenal competitor throughout her career as a professional mountain biker racing dual slalom, 4-cross, and downhill, but on September 1, 2007 it all came to a screeching halt when she hit head first on the lip of a jump during the Jeep King of the Mountain event in Beaver Creek, CO. Tara was paralyzed from the waist down instantly.
It’s been 4 years since the accident and Tara has worked hard in physical therapy to get to where she is today, which is helping the Tara Llanes Classic grow and continuing to raise money to help others that have had injuries that ended in paralysis. There are different foundations out there that help every sport except mountain biking, but that is where Tara’s heart and passion is so she will do whatever it takes to help her fellow mountain bikers.
“This sport is like a family to me and my family has been there for me since day one. There really aren’t any words to describe how that has helped me mentally and emotionally, which to be honest is almost harder to deal with that physically, but without their help I’m not sure where I’d be. So now that I can I want to be there to help others that have suffered from paralysis and buy them a new wheelchair or pay for 3 moths of their physical therapy. I just want to make life a littler easier!”
Mission Statement:
The Tara Llanes Road to Recovery Fund is here to provide skilled athletes in the sport of Mountain Biking with financial aid after a severe injury by granting funds for equipment, rehabilitation, and long-term disability.
